Why Online Pet Pharmacies are a Bad Idea

This article is designed to help you better understand your pet’s condition. This is not a substitute for a veterinary diagnosis; it intended for reference purposes and to supplement an existing diagnosis after a veterinary examination. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us at 740-432-5980. It is absolutely vital to have a veterinary diagnosis prior to following any of the instructions provided here.

It may sound cheap yet may cost you your pets health

  • Many (not all) of these pharmacies are located out of the country and their products are not FDA regulated.
  • Many (not all) put up the front of a legitimate business/pharmacy while simultaneously breaking Federal, State, and sometimes even International laws.
  • Illegal online pharmacies may sell medications that are counterfeit, outdated/expired, mislabeled, incorrectly formulated, or improperly made or stored.  These medications may not contain the actual drug at all, or the correct amount of drug.  They may also contain toxic contaminants.
  • Customer Care (if existent) for these “pharmacies” are not Veterinary Professionals and when problems arise they cannot answer your questions or help you or your pet.
  • Medications obtained online that are not FDA regulated may contain absolutely any chemical known to man and we have no way of knowing what those chemicals are.  When your pet becomes sick from medications purchased online we may not know how to treat or reverse the toxins if there is no way to know what they are.
  • We absolutely do not stand behind or guarantee any drug purchased online and neither will the manufacturer of the drug.  If the drug does not work or your pet becomes ill, you will not be reimbursed as you would if products were purchased in the clinic.
  • Keep in mind our profit margin for the medications we give you are narrow at best.  If the medications you are buying online are significantly cheaper than ours there is probably a reason for that.  We are happy to provide you with a price quote on drugs at any time and often once shipping is factored into the cost of the online prices, our prices are very competitive.
  • If you do choose to buy online, do your homework!  Research the site and be sure that they have met Federal and State licensing and inspection requirements as well as the Vet-VIPPS (Veterinary-Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites).  Visit www.fda.gov to read complaints reported by other online shoppers; this website will also provide in greater detail what precautions to take.
  • Please feel free to call with any questions!  We want you keep our clients well informed and our patients healthy and happy!  740-432-5980
